Who we are

I am a retired professional engineer residing in North Shropshire. In the summer of 2023, a lifelong friend, Peter, bequeathed to me the entire contents of his woodturning workshop. Though I had never before handled a chisel, I was deeply honoured by his generous and thoughtful gift.

We undertook the restoration of a derelict stable, converting it into a functioning workshop, and transported Peter’s tools across the Pennines to their new home.

Unfamiliar with much of the equipment, I faced a steep learning curve and embarked on a challenging yet fulfilling journey to teach myself the art of woodturning.

It is my sincere hope that my efforts go some way towards honouring Peter’s confidence in me and repaying, in part, the generosity he showed.

All of my pieces begin as raw sections of tree rather than commercially prepared “bowl blanks” that have been processed and kiln-dried to uniformity. I deliberately seek out wood that many regard as unsuitable, embracing knots, splits, and natural inclusions as distinctive features of the material.

Each piece is first cut to a rough, circular form using a chainsaw and bandsaw. To accelerate the drying process, I employ a microwave, allowing the green wood to be ready for turning within days instead of the traditional years of slow air-drying. Particularly fragile pieces are stabilized in a pressure tank with epoxy resin before turning.

The prepared blanks are then shaped on the lathe to dimensions and forms that best reveal the inherent beauty of the wood. Finally, every piece is finished with a beeswax polish and buffed to a high sheen.
