Silver birch trees grow prolifically on Whixall Moss and can be highly destructive to the peat bog ecosystem. They are regularly felled and typically consigned to firewood piles. Some trunks remain on the ground for several years, during which they develop spalting—a distinctive black pattern created by a fungus that invades the wood grain.
